[21:55:54] <Snoopotic> hmm.. does protocol encryption still make sense? it seems my provider also throttles BT although I have the BT-protocol "encrypted".
[21:56:29] <Switeck> yes and no
[21:56:43] <Switeck> yes protocol encryption helps IF you have other bases covered, otherwise no.
[21:56:45] <chelz> you can get more detailed info with the metalab tools
[21:56:56] <Switeck> Are you sending tracker updates in-the-clear?
[21:57:10] <chelz> http://www.measurementlab.net/measurement-lab-tools
[21:57:14] <chelz> er measurementlab rather
[21:58:35] <Switeck> DHT and HTTP tracker updates are not encrypted in any way and give away details to the ISP about which ips to automatically throttle to heck.
[21:58:46] <Switeck> Also, many ISPs have started throttling *ALL* unknown traffic.
[21:59:41] <chelz> there was some stuff about https trackers not too long ago but i guess it didn't catch on
[22:00:30] <chelz> also i wonder if PEX ever had or was suggested to have encryption support
[22:00:37] <Snoopotic> damn :/ one tracker is ssled... but the other... hmm. intelligent throttling... but why the hell..
[22:00:49] <Switeck> some public and private indexer websites also have at least secondary HTTPS tracker/s.
[22:01:01] <Switeck> who's your ISP?
[22:01:05] <Snoopotic> hmm it seems my osp throttles non-standard-ports
[22:01:10] <Snoopotic> Kabeldeutschland
[22:01:16] <Snoopotic> Germany
[22:01:16] <Switeck> and do they get service from a bigger jackass ISP?
[22:01:53] <Switeck> set up uTorrent to use a standard port then?
[22:02:01] <Snoopotic> because if I download from my own private FTP that is not using port 21, its also very slow. so I always move the files to my http server... :/ :D
[22:02:04] <chelz> Snoopotic: so you get less than the speeds your ISP says you should get over some ports?
[22:02:20] <Snoopotic> my ISP said it doesnÄt throttle...
[22:02:42] <Switeck> my ISP (ComCast) throttles some things at least some of the time.
[22:02:46] <Snoopotic> but the speed is only slow between 6pm and 12pm
[22:03:00] <Snoopotic> so after 12pm --- boom :D
[22:03:05] <Snoopotic> everything fine...
[22:03:16] <Switeck> it's relatively rare, I think I've seen BitTorrent throttled about 5 times since Jan. 2009.
[22:04:36] <Switeck> If it's during evening hours, just figure out how much you have then and configure appropriately.
[22:04:50] <Switeck> do most of the BitTorrent downloading/uploading outside those hours.
[22:08:36] <Snoopotic> Is it possible they do it "personalized"? I had that throttling "issues" many months ago (about 10 or so), then everything ent fine but now for at least a week I could pull my hair out of my head ^^
[22:09:08] <Switeck> they may throttle people based on their past traffic history
[22:09:18] <Switeck> it's within a possibility for some ISPs
[22:10:06] <Snoopotic> wow. thats really hard. so they possibly really play "bad admin" and would never tell it to the outside... thats f*ed up
[22:10:32] <Snoopotic> they should talk to me first.
[22:10:38] <Switeck> if someone's pulling 100+ GB during peak evening hours, it's possibly tough for them too.
[22:10:38] <Snoopotic> I could explain it them.
[22:10:42] <chelz> s'why net neutrality legislation is important to people
[22:11:08] <Switeck> cable especially has 38 (or 50) mbit/sec download channels shared typically by 100+ customers
[22:11:19] <Switeck> upload side is even worse
[22:11:47] <Switeck> often those are only 9 to 27 mbit/sec per upload channel, though they typically only have 30-100 customers per upload channel
[22:14:19] <Snoopotic> the thing is that I'm going to build up a torrent based backup-system. I build a private tracker for myself (with htaccess-secured ^^) that automatically makes torrents and my client fetches the rss and if there is a new backup my client downloads it :D hihi. abit confusing and there could be nicer ways but so I can start/stop downloading when Im at home...
[22:14:58] <The_8472> <chelz> also i wonder if PEX ever had or was suggested to have encryption support <- it has
[22:15:19] <Snoopotic> hmm glasnost-test means the ports are not throttled... hmm
[22:15:49] <chelz> The_8472: what clients? or is that part of overall protocol encryption?
[22:16:12] <Snoopotic> whatever thanks for confirming my assumptions
[22:16:30] <Snoopotic> I will look further...
[22:17:09] <The_8472> well, i know that both Az and µT support the encryption flag in PEX
