[05:53:41] <Toast_Guy> lol
[05:53:44] <Toast_Guy> What is a Tracker?
[05:53:48] *** jlouis has joined #bittorrent
[05:53:50] <Toast_Guy> and how to I add a tracker?
[05:54:27] <thewird> tracker keeps track of all the peers
[05:54:35] <Toast_Guy> hmmm
[05:54:41] <Toast_Guy> so what do I enter for that?
[05:55:00] <thewird> find a .torrent for what you want to download
[05:55:12] <Toast_Guy> um
[05:55:16] <Toast_Guy> I want to create one
[05:55:35] <Toast_Guy> so find a torrent I want to list to?
[05:55:53] <thewird> you want to create a tracker?
[05:55:57] <Toast_Guy> no
[05:56:02] <Toast_Guy> I want to add a tracker
[05:56:08] <thewird> add it to what?
[05:56:22] <Toast_Guy> when creating a new Torrent...
[05:56:53] <thewird> you need to find a public tracker then
[05:56:56] <thewird> that you can use
[05:57:07] <thewird> or find a tracker that will let you use it to host torrents
[05:57:40] <Toast_Guy> Here's the basic run down of fields I have to enter: SELECT SOURCE (the file), TRACKER PROPERTIES (under that it says Trackers, Comment, Piece Size), then OTHER (public or private).
[05:57:57] <thewird> yes exactly what i said
[05:58:01] <Toast_Guy> ok
[05:58:05] <Toast_Guy> so leave it blank?
[05:58:12] <Toast_Guy> Just select Public
[05:58:14] <Toast_Guy> and away I go?
[05:58:18] <thewird> no otherwise the torrent is useless
[05:58:29] <Toast_Guy> mmm.
[05:58:37] <Toast_Guy> oh
[05:58:56] <Toast_Guy> So how do I find a public tracker?

[22:04:06] <Toast_Guy> I have some newbie torrent questions.... I seeded a torrent with mininova
[22:04:38] <Toast_Guy> however I tried downloading from a remote connection but it won't start
[22:05:19] <ShadowJK> There needs to be atleast one client running that has the entire file
[22:05:31] <Toast_Guy> I'm thinking because the original computer I'm on... when I started the seed moved to a different location MiniNova and the other trackers got messed up on the original location of the file.
[22:05:35] <ShadowJK> Did you perhaps close your client at home before you went to that remote location to try download?
[22:05:45] <Toast_Guy> yes
[22:05:53] <Toast_Guy> I'm at a coffee shop now
[22:06:10] <Toast_Guy> I thought it would be smart and figure out the location
[22:06:14] <ShadowJK> Well, if nobody else downloaded the torrent (and kept the client open), then there'd be no seeds left now
[22:06:29] <Toast_Guy> okay.,.. so I just got to make a new one...
[22:06:31] <ShadowJK> I don't think mininova provides any seed services?
[22:06:37] <Toast_Guy> um...
[22:06:45] <Toast_Guy> I supposedly uploaded the torrent...
[22:07:03] <ShadowJK> The .torrent file?
[22:07:05] *** |charles| has joined #bittorrent
[22:07:06] <Toast_Guy> You're right, I would think they would host the file
[22:07:07] <Toast_Guy> yes
[22:07:28] <Toast_Guy> So I need to re-seed it... and KEEP that location?
[22:07:45] <Toast_Guy> so i basically need to use it like a server?
[22:07:54] <Toast_Guy> seed it from a server...
[22:07:58] <Toast_Guy> ??
[22:08:02] <ShadowJK> basically
[22:08:54] <Toast_Guy> hmmm... so the trackers are only smart enough to figure out when it was first updated?
[22:09:13] <Toast_Guy> or first loaded... and when the file makes it too another computer?
[22:09:35] <Toast_Guy> but not when another computer magically appears with the seed?
[22:10:10] <ShadowJK> That computer would have to download the same .torrent file and have the data you were distributing
[22:10:57] <Toast_Guy> So If I moved the files and torrent to the original machine it would start seeding properly again?
[22:11:14] <ShadowJK> yes
[22:11:15] <Toast_Guy> Or under the same network?
[22:11:22] <ShadowJK> Or any machine
[22:11:25] <The_8472> http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org/stats?mode=s24s <- hrrm, opentracker has some interesting stats capabilities
[22:11:25] <ShadowJK> with network
[22:12:18] <Toast_Guy> what does 24s mean?
[22:12:26] <Toast_Guy> like how long it would take to download the file?
[22:12:32] <The_8472> he doesn't know cidr ^^
[22:12:37] <Toast_Guy> lol
[22:12:39] <Toast_Guy> I don't
[22:12:58] <The_8472> then this line was not intended for you
[22:13:02] <Toast_Guy> I'm still learning about the fascinating world of torrents
[22:13:04] <Toast_Guy> k
[22:13:18] <ShadowJK> The .torrent file describes the data you are distributing. It also contains a tracker address to which peers will connect. The tracker only keeps track of what peers are involved in distributing or donwloading what torrents, and enables peers to connect to eachother by letting them know of eachother's IP. Just because you create a .torrent and put it on some tracker doesn't mean that any of the data is replicated or transfered anywhere at all
[22:13:41] <ShadowJK> For that you open the torrent on a machine that already has the contents. That machine will then be offering it to other peers
[22:14:48] *** roee88 has joined #bittorrent
[22:14:54] <Toast_Guy> when you said "for that you open the torrent on a machine that already has the contents" are you saying that I'd basically be duplicating a torrent?
[22:15:31] <ShadowJK> You'd "download" it on a machine that already has the data. You'd "save" on top of existing data. The torrent program is clever enough to see that all the data is already there, and wouldn't download, but skip direct to seeding
[22:16:35] <Toast_Guy> Ah... it eventually found it!!!!!
[22:17:00] <Toast_Guy> I guess it took a little while to propagate the system?
[22:17:50] *** datachild has joined #bittorrent
[22:18:16] <Toast_Guy> ShadowJK: ya that makes sense
[22:18:23] <ShadowJK> Well if the machine isn't reachable then it'd take awhile for it to try a connection the other way
[22:18:56] <Toast_Guy> you mean, look for other sources?
[22:19:18] <ShadowJK> yeah
[22:19:51] <Toast_Guy> ShadowJK: so how does MiniNova, PirateBay, and whoever else know that my seed exists on my machine?
[22:19:57] *** devilx has quit IRC
[22:20:03] <ShadowJK> Your machine tells them
[22:20:10] <Toast_Guy> Does the tracker list in the torrent tell them?
[22:20:21] <ShadowJK> yes
[22:20:43] <ShadowJK> That's the tracker's job. It keeps track of computers downloading/seeding a torrent.
[22:21:10] <Toast_Guy> So, I could in theory limit my torrent to JUST piratebay's tracker? or will piratebay start sharing that information with other trackers
[22:21:57] <ShadowJK> I don't think they do
[22:22:22] <Toast_Guy> so whatever happened to demonoid?
[22:22:38] * DeHackEd takes a shot of the Potion of Apathy.
[22:22:48] <ShadowJK> I don't even know what that was
[22:22:51] <ShadowJK> or is
[22:22:57] <The_8472> well, TPB runs opentracker, opentracker supports full scrapes, so one could theoretically find the hash of your torrent, obtain it via DHT and then download, assuming it's not a private torrent
[22:23:07] <The_8472> but they don't share the .torrents
[22:25:00] <roee88> Anyown knows what are µTorrent/30xx peers? (x=digit, and this is the full peer id - the rest is all spaces)
[22:26:17] <uau> you mean there are only 99 possible such ids?
[22:26:29] <uau> 100 i mean
[22:26:48] <roee88> I have only seen 30.., but it is possible that there are more
[22:27:05] <Toast_Guy> ShadowJK: yes... or is what?
[22:27:10] <roee88> actually, I think the IPs of these peers belong to my ISP
[22:27:20] <roee88> and I'm getting good speeds from these peers (only one is enough to reach my max DL)
[22:27:26] <roee88> maybe some kind of a cache? new BitTorrent service?
[22:27:34] <ShadowJK> Toast_Guy, I don't know what it was or what it is
[22:28:01] <Toast_Guy> you said... "i don't even know what that was...." on the next like you write "or is"
